Conferència del professor Michel Waldschmidt, reconegut mundialment en teoria de nombres trascendents, guardonat amb diferents premis de gran prestigi i ex-president de la Societat Matemàtica Francesa.

Titol: Irrationality and transcendence of values of special functions.

Organitza: Seminari Grup Teoria de Nombres

Abstract: There is no general result on the irrationality or transcendence of values of analytic functions: one needs to restrict to special functions. A number of results are known concerning analytic functions satisfying differential equations: we survey such results, including values of the exponential function, of elliptic or more generally abelian functions, of modular functions. We also present recent results dealing with the values of the E and G functions introduced by Siegel  in 1929.

Biographical note:  Michel Waldschmidt is one of the top experts worldwide in transcendental number theory. In 1973 he became professor at University of Paris VI where he is now Professor Emeritus.
He was awarded the Albert Châtelet Prize in 1974, the CNRS Silver Medal in 1978, the Marquet Prize of Academy of Sciences in 1980 and the Special Award of the Hardy–Ramanujan Society in 1986.
From 2001 to 2004 he was president of the Mathematical Society of France.
From 2005 to 2009 he was Vice President of CIMPA. He participates in the coordination of cooperation in mathematics with many countries, including India and Middle East.
